For the Rev. James Lawson, the civil rights activity of the 1960’s was not just a political movement but “a moment in history when God saw fit to call America back from the depths of moral depravity and onto His path of righteousness.”

C.T. Vivian was several years older than the college students with whom he demonstrated against the Jim Crow laws of Nashville. By all accounts he was intense, outspoken, and confrontational.  

The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, known as “Mother Emanuel”, was founded in 1816 in Charleston, South Carolina. It is one of the oldest continuous black congregations in the United States. 

Emmett Till was 14 years old when his mother put him on a train in Chicago to visit relatives in Money, Mississippi in the summer of 1955. She was a well educated and devoted mother who had taught her son that a person’s worth did not depend on the color of their skin.

It was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement when, on February 1, 1960, four black students from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro sat down at the whites-only lunch counter in the downtown Woolworth 5&10 variety store.
